Buy or build?
If you have basic tools, building is usually the better value for a coop that lasts — and you control the size and quality. Small flat-pack coops sold online routinely overstate capacity; a good rule is to assume a coop holds about half the birds the listing claims. Start with our build essentials guide and size it with the calculator.
When you are ready to build, our chicken coop plans give you six designs for 4 to 30 hens, each with its run plan, material list and cut list. Every guide on this page stays free.
